Barry, Damn You!

Where oh where has my Barry gone? Where oh where could he be?

I would like to take this opportunity to express my frustration and disappointment that Tropical Storm Barry drifted north of us. Yes, dammit, I love storms and was really looking forward to having one in our area.

Looking across the room at our radar, my disappointment magnifies because there are no rain clouds coming our way – once again we have escaped the severe weather.

Now, my coworkers get exasperated when I dare to voice my disappointment – they go into a long commentary on how horrible things get here in the center when the storms rage outside. Being locked down with 300+ strangers, including children of all ages and dozens of cats and dogs, is not fun – they say. Well, I agree with that but we don’t lock down for Tropical Storms or Category 1 hurricanes.

I like watching the way Nature goes from serene to a wicked frenzy. Like to go out in the storm to watch the waves in the Bay – it is amazing how high they can get! My coworkers tell me that they have been through bad storms and obviously I haven’t. I have to answer that with a resounding “duh”. It will probably only take one bad storm before I, too, dread hurricane season – but I haven’t seen one bad enough that fit’s the bill as of yet.

Yes, we get a lot of wire sparking calls when it rains – to which I say, if it is just sparking and nothing is burning, call FPL not 911.

At least we did get some much needed rain which put out our raging fires. That Georgia/Florida fire on the border up there has been burning since mid-April…amazing, huh? But it is out now and the ash has stopped falling from the sky for now.

We also got a lot of car accident because of the rain. It kind of amazes me that we get so many when most of the people living here this time of year are from northern states. How can they not know how to drive in the rain when they spent years driving on ice? Its understandable for the native Southerners but, come on, you Northerners have no excuse!
