Ok, I have some helpful bridge-walking hints that, while seem common sense, aren’t always followed:
1. Do not walk when the heat index is 97 degrees and there isn’t a cloud in the sky. You will find even a short walk is too much in such heat.
2. Do not walk when the heat index is 97 degrees and you haven’t eaten yet. You will not have enough energy to complete the walk.
3. Do not walk when the heat index is 97 degrees and you aren’t carrying enough water. Thirty-two ounces may sound like a lot but believe me, when that sun is blazing down on you and the concrete is throwing it back up at you…it is not enough.
4. Do not walk when the heat index is 97 degrees and you didn’t wear socks in your tennis shoes. The heels of your feet will be raw by the time you get back to your car because you sweat and then the shoe rubs against the skin. Very painful to be halfway back and feel like your heels are raw.
5. Do not walk when the heat index is 97 degrees and your hat isn’t ventilated. Heat escapes through your head and an unventilated hat keeps the heat from escaping making you even hotter. However, going without a hat is not a good option either because it dehydrates you very quickly.
So, to summarize –
DON’T WALK WHEN THE HEAT INDEX IS 97 DEGREES!!!
