Stapled

I got a call tonight from a security guard over at the college. He said, through his laughter, that a young coed had injured herself and needed an ambulance. When asked what the problem was – he said she accidentally stapled her hand…not badly or deeply…just barely in the skin.

It was hard for the dispatcher to voice this call over the radio in her usual monotone voice. It was even harder for the rescue to answer her without their disbelief coming through. It is a recorded line, after all, so they have to answer in controlled tones.

Well, before the rescue got on scene, one of the security guards got a pair of tweezers and plucked the staple out of her hand. When rescue got there, it was bleeding a trifle so they cleaned it with rubbing alcohol. When the girl calmed down, the rescuer asked her if it was alright if they cancelled the emergency helicopter now? Guess they all had a good laugh at the girl’s expense…hope they don’t get in trouble for that.

But come on folks…a staple in the hand? Something barely into the skin? Do we really call ambulances and paramedics for that???? REALLY???

HOT! Caller

We had a caller earlier who said she was receiving harassing phone calls from some guy she use to date. She was afraid this person might rape and/or kill her because she was incredibly “hot” and men were obsessed with her hotness. Seriously!

She said that she weighs only a hundred and five pounds with a “hot” figure and that she was the object of desire to every man she met. Sometimes, she sighed, it is a real curse to be burdened with being so gorgeous. LOL

We sent an officer out to take her complaint but he wasn’t “hot” and didn’t appreciate her hotness so she called back wanting a different officer to respond. She said if we told the officers how hot she was then several would respond and she could pick who she wanted to bestow her report on. I guess only mutually “hot” people can understand each other.

I told the call taker to ask her if she was blond as well but he was afraid he’d get into trouble. LOL. The officer who responded said she was rude and far from hot in his book. :-)

Sick Time

I am trying to decide whether or not to give some of my accrued time to a colleague that I’ve only met once. She has cancer and is off work until she is in remission.

When on of my coworkers had cancer here recently, I gave time but I had known her for over a year. I’m not a stingy person – I donate to every cause anyone here comes up with.

My leeriness is due to my upcoming vacation – I’m not sure how much extra time I’ll have after that. I can’t give time out of my sick time because it is too low.

Hard to believe it is September and in four months I’ll be having my annual review again. Seems like I just had it. Hopefully I’ll get a raise then as well which would be nice even if it is only twenty-five cents an hour. :-)

Mining Accident

Did the mining accident suddenly drop from the news or did I just miss the ending? I assume, perhaps erroneously, that they gave up on a rescue mission and have turned to body recovery. Are they even going to try to recover the bodies?? Obviously no one could live down there this long without food.

It is not an occupation I would ever want to do. Besides being claustrophobic, I am allergic to all kinds of dust. Plus I’m pretty partial to working where I can see the light of day.

I’ve heard mining is a very lucrative business – I wonder how well the miners who have to work in the tunnels are paid? Hopefully a lot since they give up their health and sometimes their lives to do their jobs.

Adventurer

So what is up with this adventurer who failed to file a flight plan and is now missing in his plane?

I find it coincidental that he has an accident the one time he fails to file a plan. His friends said he always files a flight plan not only with authorities but also tells a friend or two – but for whatever reason, he didn’t this time. One of his friends knows the general area he was going to but it spans 600+ miles which is rather hard to cover even in rescue planes. Plus it is a dense area so unless the plane make a large impact, it might not be found.

It almost sounds like a publicity stunt. I doubt it is but I really don’t have much faith in coincidences either. I hope the guy is found and that he is alright. It would be a shame to make the rescuers spend the time and money to find him if it is just a hoax.

Yacht

The other day I wrote in a post that there was a big yacht blocking my view at the Bay. It was huge, at least 65 feet long.

It was in the news today that the four people I saw drinking on the yacht had actually stolen it. The owner was out of town and they thought they’d take it for a spin and get it back before anyone noticed it was gone. The trouble was, they didn’t know how big a drift the boat had so when they went in front of the area where I park, they grounded as it was too shallow.

Our marine officers know many of the boat owners – especially the big yacht owners – and noticed in cruising by that they knew the boat but not the people on it. So the folks were all arrested. I think it is funny that I was complaining about it blocking my view and it ended up being stolen.

Update on Bridge Jumper

Last month I wrote a post about a man who jumped off one of our bridges as a stunt. Yesterday that man was released from the hospital. He had suffered seven broken ribs and both lungs had collapsed. He had to be air lifted to Tampa – his medical bills are huge. Had there not been a boat nearby he would have drowned.

In an interview I watched of his, he promised his Mom he would never do another stunt like that again – that he had pushed off wrong because he had someone filming it and knew before he hit the water that his fall was wrong. He had jumped off it four other times in the middle of the night so no one would know. The police are charging him with five counts of violating a city ordinance…guess they figure if he is dumb enough to admit he jumped five times on local television, they pretty much had a open and shut case for charging him with all five.

I hope the man learned his lesson. His injuries were painful and dehibilitating. He still isn’t healed and experiences a lot of pain. If that was my child, I’d wait till he was healed and then kick his ass for being so stupid. It reminds me of the college student back home over 10 years ago who was drunk and tried to jump from one bridge to the other. The span was over 8 feet and he thought he could climb up on the rail and jump from one to the other. There was a roller damn beneath the bridges and, needless to say, he didn’t make it. His parents were devastated – they partly blamed his friends who were also drunk but the kid obviously was stupid for trying it. What a waste of life. I told my son at that time that if he ever died because he did something that stupid, I would kick his ass all the way across heaven. :-)

Ok, One More

I almost forgot to mention this but can’t resist sharing it.

Got a call from a woman today who said she had a rabid gator in her yard. When asked why she thought it was rabid, she said because it was out of the water on land. Gators, she said, live in the water and it must be rabid to be out walking around.

I weep for society.

Obviously this woman, and others like her, need to spend less time on their soap opera’s and scifi’s and tune into the Animal Planet network. In fact, I think their tv’s should be restricted to only get the Animal Planet.

I explained to her that gators often walk around and go from one pond to the other. I told her to just leave it alone and it would go away. She was worried about the kids in the neighborhood – what if it ate one of them? Told her to tell them to stay away from it if they didn’t have enough common sense to do so on their own.

{sigh}

Biggest Loser

We watched the special “biggest loser” thing tonight – it was amazing how much weight those people have lost. They said that since the biggest loser started, their clients have lost over 6000 lbs!!!

I am working on losing weight. I’ve been able to tighten my belt another notch which is always exciting but I have so far to go that it is a small victory.

The new season of Biggest Loser starts in a couple of weeks. I think I might watch a few episodes to get inspired and keep me interested in getting into shape. I don’t have as much weight to lose as they do but I am having as much trouble losing as they are.

Well, this is it for Wednesday. Sorry it isn’t a longer post or that there aren’t more posts for the day, but I am exhausted and I have two 12 hr days ahead of me.

Be safe out there people!
