I got a call tonight from a security guard over at the college. He said, through his laughter, that a young coed had injured herself and needed an ambulance. When asked what the problem was – he said she accidentally stapled her hand…not badly or deeply…just barely in the skin.
It was hard for the dispatcher to voice this call over the radio in her usual monotone voice. It was even harder for the rescue to answer her without their disbelief coming through. It is a recorded line, after all, so they have to answer in controlled tones.
Well, before the rescue got on scene, one of the security guards got a pair of tweezers and plucked the staple out of her hand. When rescue got there, it was bleeding a trifle so they cleaned it with rubbing alcohol. When the girl calmed down, the rescuer asked her if it was alright if they cancelled the emergency helicopter now? Guess they all had a good laugh at the girl’s expense…hope they don’t get in trouble for that.
But come on folks…a staple in the hand? Something barely into the skin? Do we really call ambulances and paramedics for that???? REALLY???
