It Amazes Me

It amazes me how some people can be so callous. Were they trying to buy time so no one would find out they were drinking…if they were drinking? Or did they just not value another person’s life?

Whatever the case, someone mowed down a 55 yr old man out walking his dog. These people don’t have the luxury of claiming they didn’t see the guy or know they had hit him because he landed right on their hood. Did they seek help? There were several witnesses so surely they could have called out for help. Nope, these assholes got out of their car, threw the man onto the street and sped away.

The man is in critical condition – we flew him to the trauma center in Tampa. I doubt he will live. The bicyclist on one of my other posts did not survive. Makes me sad.

We have not caught the driver of the car. I don’t know if they’ll turn themselves in but I doubt it. Maybe their parents will see the damage that had to be done to their car and turn their kids in. Would you turn your child in for something like this?

If they were drinking the charge would be vehicular homicide – if not it could be an accident or manslaughter. By not stopping it would be hard to prove the vehicular homicide. Maybe that is part of their thinking?

Whatever the case, to be so calloused speaks volumes of what society values. I weep for society.

Be safe people, and remember that it is a lawless, wildly antisocial jungle out there. Be alert, be diligent.

Newsline News

I gotta say, watching news for hours should be a form of torture. Of the many hours I was forced to watch throughout my twelve hour day – here are two I heard that I thought was strange.

An elderly man wants to sue the Almighty. Am not sure what this one is about because I didn’t get to hear it – but just the headline made me roll my eyes.

The second one was a man who performs various snake charm tricks. One of these tricks involved letting one of these vile creatures to slide down his throat head first while he held the tail. He’d then pull the snake out to show how he had charmed it so it wouldn’t bite him. Well, it was a rattlesnake and apparently he didn’t quite charm it well enough because it bit him. I can just hear that 911 call – how can you put down what quadrant the bite is on the body if it is actually inside?

I’ve really been trying to ignore the OJ crap. The man, in my opinion, has really fallen from the grace of his glory days. He probably killed his ex-wife years ago and got away with it so he deserves, again in my opinion, everything that he gets now and more.

I feel sorry for his daughters. I’m looking at him now on the news and he has such an air of confidence – guess a robbery charge is nothing once you escape a murder rap.

Well, the news channel was finally turned to the cooking channel so guess that is it for weird news today. :-)

Thought I Was Over This

You know, I thought I let this go a long time ago but it came up yesterday and it kind of made me irate.

Back when I first started with the sheriff’s office, I had to work the switchboard until the academy started. I made a computer program in PowerPoint that asked questions I needed to know the answers too. It would run – I’d answer them for hours each shift.

One of the other newbie’s also worked the switchboard so I showed him my program. He was using it one day when our captain and lieutenant stopped by the switchboard. They were impressed with the program and my coworker didn’t tell them that I made it. He says he didn’t take credit for the program but I said that, by his silence, he did.

I let it go because it would look very petty of me to have told the captain the truth. My coworkers said later that he tried to work into a conversation he had with the captain but they were interrupted.

My coworker is trying to transfer to another department. He got a letter of recommendation and this PowerPoint thing came up again. How he took the initiative in making the program.

I know I need to let it go but it still kind of chaps my ass.

Never Know

One never knows when the bell will toll for them. We rush around not even thinking of what we are spending our precious moments on. Guess we think we have all the time in the world.

Working where I do, I encounter death a lot. It pretty much has ceased to upset me but now and then a caller gets through to my heart. Such was the case tonight.

This morning, a 96 year old female who had just celebrated her birthday yesterday with a big party, felt a little ill. Her neighbor asked if she should call the doctor but this little old woman said it was probably just indigestion and sat down in her most comfy chair to ride it out. The neighbor said she’d check on her later.

When the neighbor went over later, she found the woman still in her comfy chair looking so serene and peaceful. Her body was cold and stiff which meant, of course, that she had been dead for a few hours. This neighbor was sobbing and sobbing about how the woman told everyone at her birthday party that she was going to live to be 100.

It made me think of my grandma who use to sit in her favorite, comfy chair to knit or watch tv. She got out of the chair only when she needed to throughout the day. It was sad to think she didn’t enjoy her last years as much as she should have. Few people called her and fewer yet made the trip down to visit her.

We just never know when the bell will toll for us.

In an unrelated call, we had a bicyclist who was riding down the road a few blocks from my house. I suppose he was on his way home or to the grocery store. Two cars collided and then one careened over and hit him. They didn’t expect him to live. I’m sure it never occurred to him that today could be the day he died. Wonder what things he left unsaid or undone because he thought he had a tomorrow. {sigh}

I know…I’m being too morose for first thing in the morning.

Creepers

I was reading the book “creepers” by Michael Connelly tonight. I’ve read it before and probably commented on it at that time too but I do have to say, it is a good book. I find the idea of exploring an old hotel due to be torn down, very cool. Just think what you might see, especially if the hotel has been vacant for decades.

It was a long night at work. They ordered Chinese but I couldn’t stomach having it again when we had that just a few nights ago. Not that it is bad but a little goes a long way. People kind of thought I was being unsociable even though I told them the book was just that gripping.

After work I went to McDonalds and it was already closed – even the drive thru!! I couldn’t believe it. Taco Bell, half a block away, is open until 1 am. I had to come home and cook – only to find I really wasn’t all that hungry afterall. I hate wasting food but you can’t heat up spaghetti.

Earlier I had a great idea for a post but lost it somewhere between the bathroom and my cubicle. Hard to say what it was now but I’m sure it would have been prolific. :-)
