Walk in the Heat

OK, I forced myself to walk down to the highway and back. It is 88 degrees so I am sweating up a storm.

The walk has a slight incline on the way back so I felt like my muscles got a little bit of a workout. Tell you what, my hips hurt as I walked along. Don’t know if it was the shoes or just that it has been too long since I walked a ways.

I think the Paxil is starting to work – today I feel more uplifted and happier then I have felt in months. I forgot how nice it is to feel this good. Not to say it is working full effect yet – Doc said it would take three weeks or so and it has only been two…can’t wait to see how much better I feel in another week!

Well, time to think about work. I’m taking my new book “The Ruins” which I have no doubt is not new at all since I got it in the bargain bin for a dollar. I hope it is good. It is paperback and pretty thick so I don’t expect to get it read all today which is fine since tomorrow is a 12 hr day. :-)

Law and Order Junkie

Ok, we all have our addictions. I didn’t really understand how bad mine was until last night.

USA was having a Law and Order: CI marathon weekend. It started Saturday night and continued all day Sunday. Now mind you, most of them I have already seen but once I turned the tv on to watch one, I was stuck there the rest of the marathon.

Saturday I was lucky because around 1 or 2 am they switched over to Raw wrestling. I was kind of mad because a marathon indicates it goes without stopping but I did need to get to bed. Sunday I managed to resist the urge to turn it on until around 3pm. I was just going to see if they were still playing so I could tape a few.

You see, I get off work and the first thing I surf for is Law and Order. If I can’t find any on then I have to switch over to Murder, She Wrote but I am always disappointed. I don’t know why but Law and Order comforts me. Maybe because the bad guys are almost always caught which makes the chaos of the world seem more orderly.

Sunday they had a rerun of one they played last night and I was just going to watch it till my favorite spot was over. Next time I looked at the clock it was around 5:30. I ran down and threw the laundry in, heated up some barbeque chicken and came back up so I wouldn’t miss any.

When it came time for bed last night, I realized I had spent hours watching Law and Order both Saturday and Sunday. How weird is that? I had all this time to do other things but didn’t. {sigh}.

I’ve made my mind up that the tv is not going on when I get off work. There is almost always a Law and Order to be found on one of the channels and before I know it it is 2 am. Nope, going to check my mail, post a post and go to bed.

Maybe I’ll start working out after work…be productive rather then passive.

Windsurfing

Sitting out at the bay today, I was mesmerized by the windsurfers zig zagging back and forth in front of me. They were flying. We are being graced with an 11+ mph breeze which I guess is great for them. There are very few other boats out today and my spot was virtually void of cars.

As I deeply breathed in the salty air, I found myself mentally crossing windsurfing off my “to do” list. These people have to have extreme upper body strength to keep that sail up when the wind is blowing like this. Some of them had to practically lay in the brink when turning because the sail wanted to go the other way.

Several people fell in which makes the sail fall on the water as well. So after climbing back on the board (something I’m not sure I could do very gracefully), they have to use their muscles and body weight to pull that sail off the water. It was amazing.

A few of them weren’t wearing life jackets which I find inexcusable when going that far from shore. What if they couldn’t get back to their board? What if they hit their head on the way into the water? I realize that every sport has some safety concerns that people are ignoring but not wearing a vest seems careless. Maybe it is because I know personally that I could not swim to shore without one if I lost my board out there. I would need the vest to keep me floating while I swam because I tire fast.

They make the vests now that are flimsy and not blown up until you need them. If I were going to swim laps out by the buoys, I’d wear one. Too many currants could sweep you out further then you expected.

Then, of course, there is the issue of the sharks in the bay. I would probably spend more time bobbing in the water then on the board…at least in the beginning. What happens if they get out in the middle and the wind dies? I’ve often wondered that.
