I’m sure a lot of people saw Oprah yesterday about polygamy – the practice of having more then one spouse. Several groups of women came on the show to tell of the advantages of polygamy. Two of the women in two different groups, shared their husbands with a sister.
These women all got along, had multiple children and seemed genuinely happy. Their husbands made enough money to support the women and children. They lived in huge homes – one had 30+ bedrooms…22 children lived there and three wives.
Then they had one woman – an escapee from a commune cult – who was forced to marry a man who ended up with over 100 wives. She was 14 yrs old when they married.
As her daughter got up near her teens, the mother realized the same thing would happen to her. So one night when the husband was gone, she gathered her eight children and slipped away into the night. She said she found life outside the commune was nothing like they had told her – people weren’t evil and she met several who were actually friendly. The women in the cult were forced to dress in turn of the century clothing and not allowed contact with the outside world.
The first women made a halfway believable argument for polygamy – they dispelled some of the old stigmas I had on the issue. I could see how the women helped each other both physically, spiritually, and mentally. They really were a large family unit.
The husband came on and did not appear to be an ogre interested in dominating women. From what I could gather, it might not of been his idea to begin with that he marry his wife’s sister, but I was interrupted by the phones so missed part of that conversation.
Maybe polygamy is the answer to there being more women then men in the world. The Indians often practiced it and it worked for them as well. Personally, I don’t think I could do it myself but if others can then more power to them…especially if the father can support them all.
Of course, the last woman made me think again about men who have harems in cults who force women to marry them and give them children. I don’t believe any marriage should be forced on anyone.
I do wonder how many women and men would practice polygamy if it were socially acceptable.
