Started and finished this book today by John Sandford. It is the latest in the “prey” series with Lucas Davenport as the police officer. The book is billed as “rivetingly readable” and while it is the latter, I would have to beg to differ on the former. It has all the suspense of a comedy as well – though that isn’t to say it was not good.
The storyline is alright and hard to figure out, I must give it that. The first murder is easy to figure out but than the murders that follow are a little more difficult. I didn’t find the “phantom” to be very phantomish so that was a bit disappointing.
The book is about a woman who comes home to find her daughter missing and blood in the house. About a month later, the daughter’s friends are murdered one by one. Lucas is asked to help on the case and sets about finding the responsible party. The characters – including Lucas, his wife Weather, children and friends – are all vivid and colorful.
I guess I was hoping for something that would stump me a bit more but such is life. My next book is “Winter study” by Navada Barr. It is the latest “Anna Pigeon” book so will be full of information about Isle Royale State Park as that is where it is set. Isle Royale is around Lake Superior – but I’m not sure if it is the same park from her book “A Superior Death” so guess reading it will clear that up.
Phantom Prey is worth reading, especially if you have read the other Lucas Davenport books of which there are 19 besides this one.
For those of you wondering where I’ve been – yesterday I was recovering from medical tests done Tuesday. Both days were rough for me – I didn’t start feeling better till mid-afternoon today. I have another doctor’s apt tomorrow morning but hopefully it will be an informational thing rather than more poking and prodding. I will try to write more posts tomorrow when I get back from the doc’s.
